Planning State of Play
This is a snapshot of the WCA perspective on the current state of play for major projects in Watson.
Please let us know if you come across a planning issue, especially for these large sites. The WCA is happy to lobby etc, but we need your insight.
Inner North Playground - Windeyer Street
Positives
-
Fantastic exciting design - plus a public toilet!
-
A variety of elements catering to all ages
-
Good access to public transport and bike paths
Concerns
-
Parking will be a problem, especially on weekends
Verdict
-
5+ years of lobbying pays off
The Car-O-Tel site
Aspinall Street
There was a zoning change flagged about 12 months ago but it seemed to come to nothing.
However, it's the biggest patch of land in private hands in Watson. It seems inevitable that it will be developed at some stage.
We need to keep a really good watch on it.
Verdict
-
Let's avoid another set of Norrebro-style towers
Block 76
Aspinall Street
Positives
-
The fantastic new playground is open and getting lots of use
-
The tree line is almost totally protected
-
The housing density is manageable and of reasonable scale
-
One block will be set aside for innovative community building housing style
Concerns
-
Parking is a potential issue. How much parking will be on site? It is a bit opaque from the current plans. In any event there is rarely enough, and the surrounding streets have no excess capacity
Verdict
-
A win for good lobbying, but not perfect
The AIE Redevelopment
V2
Windeyer St/Phillip Ave
Positives
-
The site will continue to grow and be used for educational purposes
-
There seems to be a genuine desire for community involvement
Concerns
-
The scaling down in V2 due to financial constraints has led to a less "friendly" design
-
There must be a concern for the future model given the planned reduction in Australia's overseas student intake
-
The original timeframe was 10+ years. What is it now?
Verdict
-
Still lots of unknowns. Watch and wait
Watson Service Station Site
Windeyer Street
Positives
-
We can't find any. Can you?
Concerns
-
The vacant lot full of rubble and rubbish is an eyesore and there seems to be nothing planned
Verdict
-
Yuck! Can we at least get it cleaned up?
