Watson Street Names

In 1927 a committee was set up to name the streets and suburbs of Australia's new capital city. The National Memorials Committee proposed that street names in Canberra's suburbs follow a theme. That policy (one of the oldest in the ACT) is still in place. Watson streets are named with a theme of "judiciary".

Today, ACT Place Names, in consultation with the ACT Place Names Advisory Committee, undertakes research for new place names in accordance with the Public Place Names Act 1989.

You can search for your street and find out who it was named after on the ACT Government's mapping tool here.

Watson Street Trees

In the ACT there are over 820,000 trees on public (unleased) land. This includes along suburban streets, at local shopping centres, along major roads and medians, and in parks and open spaces. All trees on public land are protected under the Urban Forest Act 2023 (the Act).

The ACT Government manages trees on public land. This includes new plantings, inspection and pruning of trees, and the removal and replacement of dead or hazardous trees. Effective management maintains a safe and sustainable tree canopy.
